Amboseli was set aside as the southern reserve for the Masai in 1906, but returned to local control as a game reserve in 1948. It was gazetted as a national park in 1974 to protected its unique eco system. This park is famous for being the best place in the world to get close to free ranging elephants. It also gives an opportunity to see the Masai and their cultural and traditional ways of life in their villages. The park also has views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world. The park also offers an opportunity to see African wildlife because of the sparse vegetation due to long dry months. The protected area has animals like the African bush elephants, cheetah, lions, Masai giraffe, blue wildebeest, cape buffalo, impala.
